Tom Proctor grew up in Kinston, NC and graduated from UNC Chapel Hill in 1982 with a degree in Geology. Tom and his wife, Jo Ann, daughter, Sarah, and son, Aaron, have lived in Raleigh for over 20 years. Tom started Mid-Atlantic Associates, Inc. in 1993 with a partner and serves as its president. Mid-Atlantic provides environmental engineering and consulting services to industrial, municipal, and commercial interests. Their services include soil and groundwater assessment and remediation, air quality and storm water permitting, and asbestos sampling.
In addition to his involvement with Stop Hunger Now, Mr. Proctor serves as an elder at Grace Community Church where he has been an active member for more than five years. He also enjoys outdoor activities including hunting, fishing, and golfing.
Dr. Abbas is a native of Iowa, having grown up on a commercial farm. Following an undergraduate degree from Iowa State in Agricultural Business and Production, he joined the Peace Corps serving as an assistant cantonal agricultural extension agent in Ecuador. Subsequently, he joined the Peace Corps staff in Bolivia as a contractor via the Heifer Project. After earning a Master of Science degree in agricultural economics at Montana State, he completed a doctorate in economics at Oregon State. He has served on the faculty at the University of Georgia and North Carolina State University.
For many years, he has operated his own business, offering financial services and consulting to the public. He is also CFO of a firm in international commodity trading.
His volunteer activities include: Rotary, of which he has been a member since 1984, former president and Secretary, and is currently Board Director for International Service. Over the years he oversaw many humanitarian projects in Bolivia. Current projects are in the Ukraine, Colombia, Guatemala and Brazil. Leon is also a member of CADRE, a small group of volunteers who evaluate projects onsite for the Rotary Foundation.
Leon was a founder of the Alliance Medical Ministry. He served as the initial secretary for the first three years.
Leon is active in supporting Bahamas Habitat. Currently he is involved in building an orphanage and renovating a former church into a building suitable for volunteer housing and base of operations.
Leon is a member of the First United Methodist Church/Cary Endowment Committee. This activity involves consulting with potential donors and overseeing the arrangements for future transfers.
Leon is married to the former Sallie Wright; they have twin sons and three grandchildren. Sallie is president of the North Carolina Partners of the Americas and he supports her in her work in this organization which does international exchange projects.

Earning a BS in Finance from Penn State, Kurt joined GE in 1977 in the financial accounting field and moved to GE Credit in 1980. He held a variety of financial, then hedging operations, then product development positions in several GE Capital businesses before joining GE Capital’s mortgage insurance business in 1990 as a Product Developer. In his 22 year tenure with Genworth’s US MI business Kurt performed a variety of product development roles, including 2 years as VP-Affordable Housing. Most recently, Kurt has leveraged his deep industry knowledge and analytical strength to serve as Business Competitiveness Manager with the Government and Industry Relations group, performing strategic policy analysis and providing support for initiatives shaping USMI’s competitive environment.
Kurt has been site leader for Genworth Volunteers for 7 years, and served on the Genworth Foundation Board from 2007 to 2012. He also recently finished 4 year’s service on the Montessori School of Raleigh Board of Trustees, volunteers with Wake County Boys & Girls Clubs, and is creator and leader of Genworth’s Home Of Your Own financial literacy workshop for youth.
Kurt is married to Nancy Arehart, also a long-service Genworth associate, and they have two sons, aged 15 and 25.

Anne Grimsley Bander serves as Chief Operating Officer to the Department of Administration. Her responsibilities include managing and monitoring the day-to-day activities and operations of the Department and taking a leadership role in the establishment of performance indicators and the monitoring of performance against goals for the Department. Additionally, she serves as the Department's Director of Internal Auditing. Prior to her February 2010 appointment, she was the Assistant State Budget Officer for Government Evaluation and Review in the Office of State Budget and Management.
Bander first started in the Department of Administration in 1980 in the Office of Administrative Analysis, later moved to the Office of State Budget and Management where she worked from 1991 until 2005. After a brief retirement from state service, she rejoined the Office of State Budget and Management in November 2008.
A native of South Carolina, Anne lived in many places around the country and in Europe as an Army"brat”. She received a B.A. from the University of Maine at Orono and her M.A. from University College Dublin (part of the National University of Ireland).
Anne served on the Board of Trustees at Temple Beth Or, where she has also served as Executive Director and Temple President. Through her membership with Temple Beth Or and has worked a regular route delivering Meals on Wheels.
Terry has served as Senior Pastor of Asbury United Methodist Church in Raleigh for the past six years. Before moving to Raleigh Terry served as the pastor of churches in Franklin County, Spring Hope, Burlington, Carthage, Sanford, and Rocky Mount.
Terry is a native of Virginia where he graduated from Virginia Tech. He received his Master’s degree from Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary in Wake Forest, NC.
Terry’s interest and experience in ecumenism and hunger issues have led to leadership roles in a number of organizations: NC Conference Division of Ecumenical and Interreligious Concerns, Sanford District Board of Missions, NC Board of Church and Society, Allied Churches of Alamance County, and Sandhills Coalition for Human Care, as well as recruitment responsibilities in CROP Walks for Hunger in Alamance and Moore Counties.
Terry is grateful to serve the Asbury congregation, a missional congregation that is very active in supporting the work of Stop Hunger Now by hosting annual packaging events, as well as additional events to support disaster relief. Terry is married to Linda and they have one son. Terry’s interests include spending time at home, reading, and visiting Civil War sites.
Born in Winston-Salem, NC and growing up nearby in Guilford County, Pam graduated from Wake Forest University (B.A., 1978) and Duke University Divinity School (M.R.E., 1983; ThM., 1986).
Pam became an ordained Elder in the United Methodist Church in 1988 and served churches in Winston-Salem, Greensboro, and Charlotte. She served as Associate Minister of a suburban church, a college campus minister, Director of Missions and most recently as Mission Specialist of the Western NC Conference.
Pam has been on a number of UMVIM trips to both Guatemala and Haiti and attended her first medical clinic week in Haiti with Orovidence UMC, Charlotte in Oct. 2006; since that time she has made great efforts to support this vital work. Pam also worked with Providence UMC, Charlotte leadership to expand their medical clinic ministry to include support of a Haitian primary school and a micro-credit lending program which serves rural communities in the Cap Haitien area. She now serves as President of the Haiti Mission Foundation which oversees the healthcare/clinic portion of this vital ministry.
Pam also serve as the Mission Interpreter of Encounter with Christ in Latin America and the Caribbean, a permanent fund of the General Board of Global Ministries. The fund provides $3 of every $4 spent beyond missionary support for ministry initiatives in the region.
Pam now resides in Lakeland, Florida with husband, Bishop Ken Carter who serves the Florida United Methodist Conference. Two adult daughters. Oldest, Liz is a Chinese translator/interpreter who lives in Washington, DC. Youngest, Abby, will begin seminary at Duke Divinity in the fall of 2013.

Michael is an audit partner in the Raleigh office of Ernst & Young LLP. He has over twenty years of experience working with public and private companies including life sciences (biotechnology, medical device, contract research organizations and pharmaceuticals), industrial, non profit, manufacturing and entrepreneurial companies. Michael has extensive transactional experience assisting clients with initial public offerings, debt offerings, mergers and acquisition transactions, and private equity offerings. Additionally, Michael serves several clients with significant international operations, as well as subsidiary companies of global entities.

Kate has 25 years of professional management experience that includes international technology sales and operations, strategy and business development. Her expertise focuses on building new organizations and expanding lines of business. She has been selected as a guest speaker at international conferences in Europe, Canada and the US.
As the Director of Cisco’s Sales Associates Graduate Program (CSAP), Kate runs an industry award winning global program responsible for hiring and developing recent college graduates for placement in field sales positions around the world. In 2011-2012, the program received three prestigious industry awards recognizing CSAP’s excellence in talent development and global operations.
Kate has previously held a variety of positions within Cisco in their London, UK and RTP, NC locations over her 15 year tenure with the company.
Prior to joining Cisco, Kate spent 7 years with Oracle Corporation where she held various positions in Sales, Marketing and Business Development Management. Kate holds a BA in History from Dartmouth College in Hanover, NH. She attended the University of Michigan for her MBA.
Kate and her husband, Stephen, have a son and a daughter, and reside in Raleigh, North Carolina.
Rabbi Lucy Dinner, Senior Rabbi of Temple Beth Or, Raleigh, NC, since 1993, works with congregants to foster involvement in all areas of Jewish life. Rabbi Dinner has overseen the expansion of Temple Beth Or’s membership, programming, educational activities and facilities. Some of the innovations she has helped to bring to the congregation include: innovative worship opportunities, family education, Israel education, young adults and family programming, mitzvah day, interfaith dialogue, and ongoing lay Torah study.
In addition to her congregational duties, Rabbi Dinner has served on many boards and committees in the Triangle including: the Stop Hunger Now, the Advisory Boards of the North Carolina Food Bank the Urban Ministries Advisory Board, the Interfaith AIDS Commemoration Committee, the Duke Symposium on Care at the End of Life, and the Martin Luther King Observance Breakfast, amongst others. Rabbi Dinner also oversees the Triangle Rabbis’ Introduction to Judaism classes, and leads congregational and community trips to Israel and other Jewish communities.
Nationally, Rabbi Dinner has served on the ARZA World Union North American Board, the URJ Committee on the Jewish Family, the UAHC-CCAR Commission on Youth, the Commission on Synagogue Affiliation, the CCAR – URJ Committee on Rabbinic/Congregational Relationships, the HUC/CCAR Rabbinic Mentor Committee and the CCAR Resolutions Committee. Rabbi Dinner is a member of the Reform Rabbi’s “Reform Vision Initiative”, which is reimagining Judaism for the next century.
Rabbi Dinner has been published in a chapter in the book The Woman’s Torah Commentary. She has been honored with the induction into the YWCA’s Academy of Women and The Women’s Club Academy of Women. In 2012, Rabbi Dinner was one of five rabbis selected to write Torah Commentary on an entire book of Torah for the Union for Reform Judaism’s Ten Minutes of Torah series.
Rabbi Dinner grew up in New Orleans, Louisiana. She received her undergraduate degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in Public Policy Analysis, and her Rabbinic ordination and graduate degree in Hebrew Letters from the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion. At Hebrew Union College Rabbi Dinner helped to found an overflow homeless shelter and received the Sisterhood Award for Women Rabbinic Students. Upon ordination, Rabbi Dinner served as Associate Rabbi at Shaare Emeth congregation in St. Louis, Missouri.
Rabbi Dinner is married to Jeffrey Dinner and has two sons. She met her husband and found a profound love for living, celebrating and teaching Judaism at the UAHC, Henry S. Jacobs Camp in Utica, Mississippi. The combination of a family that emulated Jewish values through everyday experience commitment to social justice and the embracing spiritual life inspired Dinner to pursue the rabbinate.

Rob is a native of Oklahoma, having received his BSBA in Managerial Economics from the University of Tulsa in 1971. He and his wife, Jo Elaine, relocated to Raleigh, North Carolina in May 2003 when Rob joined the law firm of Smith, Anderson, Blount, Dorsett, Mitchell & Jernigan LLP as the Firm's Executive Director. As Executive Director he ran the day-to-day operations of the Firm until his retirement in 2011. He currently does independent consulting, specializing in law firm management issues.
Prior to joining Smith Anderson, Rob was the Chief Operating Officer of Blackwell Sanders Peper Martin from 1993 until April 2003. A Kansas City based firm, Peper Martin grew from 90 to over 300 lawyers and opened new offices in 5 cities during Rob's tenure. Prior to joining Blackwell Sanders he was the Director of Human Resources and International Operations for Squire, Sanders & Dempsey, a Cleveland based law firm. He was with Squire Sanders from 1987 until 1993. Originally he was hired by Squire Sanders as their Director of Human Resources, overseeing all HR matters for the Firm's 7 offices. In 1991 the Firm decided to expand into Central and Eastern Europe and Rob was placed in charge of opening new offices in Prague, Czech Repulic, Bratislava, Slovakia, Budapest, Hungary, Kiev, Ukraine and London, England for the firm. During the period from late 1991 until his departure from the Firm, Rob lived in Prague and commuted to/from his home base in Cleveland.
Prior to his retirement, Rob was an active member of the Association of Legal Administrators. During his 26 year tenure with the ALA he was a member of the National Nominating Committee, a member of the the National Educational Conference Committee, Chair of the National Education Committee, and a member of the Steering and Educational Committees of the Large Firm Administrator's Caucus, a subgroup of ALA members comprised of the top administrative executive from the largest law firms in the United States.
Prior to entering into law firm management, Rob held numerous management positions. He was the Senior Vice President and General Manager for three different companies: Peerless Wholesale Food Distributors, Southwest Sporting Goods, and Consolidated Deliveries; however his management career actual started with Trans World Airlines, where he worked full time while attending the University of Tulsa.

Paul Huckle is Chief Regulatory Officer and Senior Vice President for GlaxoSmithKline with worldwide responsibility for managing regulatory affairs. Dr Huckle provides regulatory counsel to senior management, participates in senior committees within the company and leads any significant regulatory action to support or extend the GSK portfolio of medicines. Dr. Huckle has responsibility for regulatory staff located on all GSK development sites, including USA and Europe. He moved to the USA in 2006 and is primarily based in RTP, NC.
Before entering the regulatory arena, Dr. Huckle worked for ten years in the field of pharmaceutical development with responsibility for the development of prescription and over-the-counter medicines. Prior to joining the pharmaceutical industry he held an academic position at The School of Pharmacy, University of London. He holds an Honors degree in Pharmacy and a Ph.D. in Pharmaceutics from the University of London, and is a registered pharmacist in the UK.
Outside of work Dr Huckle has held a number of voluntary roles in support of community based organizations.

James Kiwanuka-Tondo, Ph.d., (NCSU) is an Associate Professor, Coordinator of the Public Relations program in the Department of Communication at North Carolina State University, and Director of International Studies in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences. He is a member of the NC State Faculty Senate and President-Elect of Sigma Iota Rho Honor Society for International Relations, Eta Chapter of North Carolina State University.
His main area of research is health communication campaigns with particular emphasis on HIV/AIDS. His major contribution to the area has been the building of the first ever quantitative model of relationships between organizational factors, campaign planning, and campaign execution variables. He has also studied the influence of HIV/AIDS public policy statements on the on the behaviors and beliefs of people of South Africa, as well as on the organizations and preventive strategies to reduce HIV/AIDS in Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania.
Dr. Kiwanuka-Tondo received the award for Outstanding Graduate Teacher of the Year, Department of Communication, 2007/2008; the Advocacy Award for Promoting the Presence of African American at North Carolina State University 2007/2008; and the Outstanding Undergraduate Teacher Spring 2007, Department of Communication, North Carolina State University. He also received the Outstanding Professor of the Year Award 1999, from Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity, University of Connecticut. He has been a principal investigator on several research grants and has authored several publications and conference papers. He is a Fellow of the Salzburg Seminar, and a recipient of the Fulbright Scholarship, as well as the British Commonwealth Technical Scholarship.
John Martin brings over 20 years of media experience to NASCAR Media Group. Over that time he has developed a reputation as an expert at developing business strategies and partnerships that deliver revenue from the traditional and emerging media landscape.
Martin was a key member of the executive leadership team that combined the NASCAR Images and NASCAR Digital Entertainment divisions of NASCAR to create the NASCAR Media Group. He wrote and executed the capital expenditure plan to build NASCAR Media Group’s state-of-the-art production and office facility in uptown Charlotte. Additionally, he led the television sales division to achieve a 20% revenue growth, launched NASCAR’s News Department, spearheaded NMG’s internal cost tracking process and oversaw the Production Operation’s divisions during NMG’s transition into the new facility. Currently he is responsible for the Business Operations and Interactive Divisions of NASCAR Media Group.
Prior to joining NMG, Martin spent seven years at Turner Broadcasting. As a member of the executive team at Turner Sports, he spearheaded new business development for the Turner Sports Digital division. Before his foray into the new media side of Turner Sports, Martin was the director of marketing and programming for the various Turner Sports properties working closely with NASCAR, the NBA, MLB, the PGA of America and college football.
Martin’s additional experiences include two years as the head of sales for Golfport, an internet golf company that provided turnkey services to golf and country clubs and seven years as head of the Sports Licensed Products division of Champion Products, a $400M athletic apparel company. At Champion Products, Martin successfully launched the inaugural WNBA and NFL Thrownbacks merchandise lines and drove the dramatic growth of Champion’s Sports Licensed Products division during Michael Jordan’s return to the NBA earning Champion the designation of the #1 licensee of the NBA.
His media experience began at Titan Sports, the parent company of the World Wrestling Federation by participating in the stunning growth of this media empire’s Pay-Per-View division and syndicated television department. Martin has a Master’s Degree from the University of Massachusetts/Amherst and an undergraduate degree from Colgate University. He lives in Charlotte, NC with his wife Kathryn and their two children, Diane and Jack.
Mack is self employed for 22 years as a retirement planner where he represents Lincoln Financial Group, John Hancock Life and other companies. During the first 10 years of his career he worked in industry for two Fortune 500 Companies, namely, Celanese and Stauffer Chemical Company. These early years involved employment in marketing and sales and he covered areas in the eastern part of the United States and Canada. Mack has also taught courses in business and economics at the college and community college level.
He has a Bachelor of Science degree from North Carolina Agriculture & Technical State University in Greensboro. He earned a Master of Business Administration Degree in finance from the University of New Haven in West Haven, Connecticut. Mack has been married to Wanda for 35 years. She is a project leader at Duke Clinical Research Institute, part of Duke University Health Systems in Durham. They have two daughters, Alysia (husband Cornelius) and LaTosha; and one granddaughter, Cynthia. Alysia is a Certified Nurse Midwife and LaTosha is an educator, currently teaching U.S. and World History in Antigua, an island in the Eastern Caribbean. LaTosha is a Peace Corps Alumna, as she served two years in South Africa. Mack’s hobbies include scubadiving, snow skiing, golf, tennis and walking.
Mack has held leadership positions in the North Carolina Conference of the United Methodist Church. This includes serving as chairman of the Board of Trustees of the United Methodist Retirement Homes, Inc. Under Mack’s leadership, the Board authorized the building of a $15 million continuing care retirement center to replace an aging facility in Lumberton, North Carolina. He was a delegate to the 2000, 2004 and 2008 General Conference and the Southeastern Jurisdictional Conference. The General Conference is the law making body of the church, and the Southeastern Jurisdictional Conference elects the Episcopal leaders. He is the Southeastern Jurisdictional Representative to the General Commission on United Methodist Men. He is a past conference president of the United Methodist Men.
It was in 1988 when Mack joined the Rotary Club of Millbrook. In 1996, he transferred to the Rotary Club of North Raleigh. There he has served as secretary and director, and during the 2006-2007 Rotary year, he served as club president. For five years he served as district chairman of the Rotary Against Drugs Speech Competition. Mack and Wanda have served as a host family counselor for a World Peace Scholar student from Sweden, when he was enrolled at Duke University Peace Center. He has served as an Assistant Governor for the five Raleigh area clubs and just stepped down as District Governor June 30, 2012. Mack is a multiple Paul Harris Fellow, a sustaining member, a Benefactor and a Bequest Society Member.
Rajesh Rao is co-founder and CEO of IndUShealth, a North Carolina based company that provides highly affordable medical travel alternatives to underinsured individuals and global health option plan administration services to self-insured employers across the U.S. With more than twenty years of experience in the creation and growth of successful entrepreneurial businesses in North Carolina, Mr. Rao provides IndUShealth a critical combination of operational, financial, and systems management skills.
Mr. Rao began his career as a software engineer at IBM in Raleigh, later joining the founding team at Post Software International based in Wake Forest, where he ultimately became Director of Research and Development. Post Software became an established worldwide leader in retail systems automation and was acquired by Fujitsu ICL. Subsequently, Mr. Rao co-founded and served as CEO of Empower Corporation, a Raleigh-based innovative enterprise e-learning software company that served several large multinational companies.
Empower eventually became MindLever, which was acquired by Centra Software (Nasdaq: CTRA). Mr. Rao continued as General Manager at Centra prior to co-founding IndUShealth. Having faced ever-increasing costs of providing health benefits to employees in his previous companies, Mr. Rao decided to dedicate his time and resources to the pursuit of viable alternatives. He believed that the leveling of the global playing field would result in effective cross-border solutions with the potential to introduce healthy competition and thereby substantially reduce health-care expenditure without compromising quality.
Since its establishment, Mr. Rao has been instrumental in building IndUShealth into a dominant player in the U.S. that has helped the medical travel trend to mature and evolve to an entirely new level. He enjoys being able to innovate and work with others to further expand IndUShealth's offerings and broaden its scope of influence.
Mr. Rao is recognized as an industry leader and is often asked to speak to audiences at meetings and conferences. He has been featured in several news articles, as well as in TV and radio interviews. In June 2006, Mr. Rao appeared as an expert witness before the US Senate Subcommittee on Aging, extolling the advantages of employer-assisted medical travel, and sparking a national debate over insurers' and corporations' roles in medical tourism. He was also invited to speak at a National Academies seminar that explored the potential role of medical tourism in providing a suitable alternative to Americans.
Mr. Rao has been actively involved in the Research Triangle Park entrepreneur community, and has previously served as President and Charter Member of TiE-Carolinas. He enjoys providing mentorship and guidance to entrepreneurs in the area, and encouraging the perpetuation of the cycle of innovation, success and giving. He holds Bachelor's degrees in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from North Carolina State University.
Adam Saffer is a successful entrepreneur and corporate executive with 30 years experience in strategic planning and execution, business start-up, marketing, business development, and general management with both small to medium private and large publically traded organizations in the US and abroad.
Living overseas for 20 years in Africa, Asia, Latin America, Europe, and the Middle East, he has worked in diverse cultural settings with a wide variety of international government agencies, NGOs, and private firms. Prior to founding GDI, he was the President of Coffey Americas, a mid-cap publically traded firm on the Australian Stock Exchange (ASX). At Coffey, with a staff of 1,100 and a budget of US$300M, he had full P&L responsibility for all Coffey businesses in Canada, the US, and South and Central America. Adam has been in the international development industry since 1991, having worked with directly USAID and then with for and not for profit government contractors in over 30 countries.
His client experience and relationships span numerous bilateral and ultilateral donors, development banks, NGOs, and foundations. Immediately after obtaining his MBA, he started, and later sold, a successful management consulting business in England to his main client, a FTSE traded mixed-used property developer. Adam started off his career as a Field Engineer, and later Country Manager, for Schlumberger Africa Limited, a leading oil field services company. Adam has also served on multiple for profit and nonprofit boards.
Currently he sits on the board of Stop Hunger Now, an international hunger relief organization focused on international school feeding programs and disaster relief. He received a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from Cornell University; a MBA from the Harvard Business School, and a Ph.D. in Political Science from Pacific Western University. He resides in McLean, Virginia with his wife, Alison, and two sons, Jordan and Taylor. Personal interests include sailing, mountaineering, jazz guitar, and woodworking.

Jeff Truitt is an attorney in the Corporate and Commercial groups at Smith Anderson, the largest law firm headquartered in the Raleigh-Durham metropolitan area. His practice areas include mergers and acquisitions, corporate governance, commercial and finance transactions and government contracting. He also routinely represents early stage, growth and venture-backed companies in all phases of start-up, financing and exits. He has experience working with clients in a broad range of industries, including technology, software, utilities, pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, manufacturing, distribution, energy and professional services.
Prior to joining Smith Anderson, Jeff practiced general business law in the corporate group at Sidley Austin LLP in Chicago. In addition to assisting a number of large, public companies with a variety of transactional matters, he was actively involved in developing the numerous legal guarantees that supported Chicago’s bid to host the 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
Before working in private practice, Jeff served as general counsel for an overseas military command near London, as well as a nuclear-trained submarine officer in the Seattle area. He currently holds the rank of Commander in the Selected Reserves of the U.S. Navy. Jeff graduated with Distinction from the United States Naval Academy, and received an M.A. from the University of Maryland-College Park as well as a J.D. (with Honors) from the University of Chicago Law School. Jeff lives in Clayton, NC, with his wife, Catherine, and three young children.
Dr. A. Hope Williams is president of North Carolina Independent Colleges and Universities, the statewide advocacy and public policy organization for the 36 independent, or private, colleges and universities in the state. As president, she is the chief executive officer for the 36 presidents who comprise NCICU’s Board of Directors and for the Independent College Fund of North Carolina, that raises corporate and foundation funds for student scholarships. She has been president of NCICU since 1992.
Dr. Williams serves on the Education Cabinet with the Governor, the presidents of the state university system, the Department of Community Colleges, and the State Board of Education and Department of Public Instruction to address issues affecting education in North Carolina. At the national level, Dr. Williams has served as chair of the National Association of Independent Colleges and Universities State Executives and as a member of the board of the National Association of Independent Colleges and Universities.
Dr. Williams received her undergraduate degree in French and History from Duke University, an MPA degree in Public Affairs from North Carolina State University and a doctorate in Education from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She received the Outstanding Service Award from the Rotary Club of Raleigh in 1997, was named the 1999 Distinguished Woman of North Carolina in Education, one of the top 25 Women in Business in 2001 by The Business Journal and a Woman Extraordinaire in 2005 by Business Leader Magazine.
She has served as president of the North Carolina Adult Education Association and of the North Carolina Association of Institutional Researchers. She serves on the National Advisory Board of the Institute for Emerging Issues, College Foundation, Incorporated, Public School Forum of North Carolina, Communities in Schools of North Carolina, Capital City Club, Foundation for Independent Higher Education’s National Venture Fund Committee and the Chair of Advanced Energy Corporation. She and her husband, Tom Bersuder, are the parents of two sons, ages 23 and 20.
Alan is a native of North Carolina and has spent the last 30 years building and growing healthcare IT companies in the Research Triangle. He was the co-founder and president of Medic Computer Systems, a company that provided practice management and EMR systems to the physician marketplace. The company went public in 1992 and was sold to Misys LLC in 1997. At the time of the sale Medic served over 60,000 physicians and had revenues in excess of $200 million. In 2001 Alan became the CEO and President of Canopy Systems, Inc based in Chapel Hill. Canopy provided a case and care management system via the web to health systems across the US. The company rapidly became the leader in automated care management and the product was popular with many of the largest health systems in the country. In 2005 the company was purchased by A4 Systems out of Cary, NC. In 2007 Winchester became the CEO and President of RxMedic Systems, Inc. a startup robotics company in the pharmaceutical industry. The company was successful developing and building a robotic pill dispensing system for the retail pharmacy market. After building a strong base of pharmacy clients in the Southeast the company was sold in 2010 to a large national pharmacy IT company. Today Alan provides consulting services to healthcare and technology companies.
Alan received a BS in Business from UNC Chapel Hill and earned a Master in Divinity from Southeastern Theological Seminary. He is a member of Hillyer Memorial Christian Church where he has served as a youth advisor, Sunday school teacher, Deacon and Elder. He has been married for 32 years to his wonderful wife Nora and has 3 children. Alan is an avid outdoorsman and is a lifelong fly fisherman.
