Local Haiti Relief Drive Exceeds Goals

Peace Presbyterian partnered with Stop Hunger Now in a meal packaging event that doubled it's original goal of 10,000 meals.

Peace Presbyterian Church in Winterville partnered with Stop Hunger Now in an effort to help Haiti. The church has been involved with Haiti for over 20 years, sending missions trips and aid, and a missions committee meeting was being held the Tuesday evening when news of the earthquake started coming in. Over 125 volunteers came to Peace, a dedicated mission church, the following Sunday to package food. Volunteers included everyone from elementary school students needing chairs to reach the supplies, to senior citizens who stood for hours to accomplish the church’s goal of 10,000 meals. This goal was far exceeded. The church sent an email to the congregation, and the news reached the local paper. Donated funds covered 20,000 meals, and at the end of the day the church announced it would continue to collect donations to hold another meal packaging event the following Sunday. Spokespeople from the church were thrilled at the eagerness of the community to pitch in. Rev. Gun Ho Lee, who leads the church’s Korean congregation, noted that although he has previously encountered difficulty getting his congregation interested in overseas work, they are already demonstrating a desire to help Haiti in any way possible. Peace is one of many churches and organizations that are stepping up, and Stop Hunger Now’s Rick Kearney reminds everyone that it is important to remember the people of Haiti even after they’ve fallen from the headlines. “The need is urgent right now, but it will remain urgent for months and years,” he said.
