How Stop Hunger Now is Responding to the Crisis in Haiti
Before the devastating January earthquake, Stop Hunger Now had slated 3 million prepackaged meals to go to Haiti. In addition to those, SHN has sent over 5 million meals for earthquake relief and has even more scheduled to be sent. Below is a video of the most recent update SHN has on its Haiti Relief campaign.
Stop Hunger Now's primary partners on the ground in Haiti are Mission of Hope and Haiti Outreach Ministries. Mission of Hope is a USAID organization that runs school feeding and poverty relief programs, and Haiti Outreach Ministries runs three schools in slum areas and is heavily involved in disaster relief.
In the first few weeks following the earthquake, Stop Hunger Now recieved over 200 tons of aid supplies for Haiti. This aid included water, precooked chicken and beef, rice, and canned foods such as fruits, vegetables, and meat. SHN also recieved generous donations of thousands of Isagenix Meal Supplement Shakes, KIND PLUS Health Bars, and Athletes Milk, a meal replacement drinks. Almost all of this aid and more than 1 million meals have already made their way to Haiti.
In addition to food and water, Stop Hunger Now is also assisting with the transportation and distribution of over 56 tons of medical supplies and blankets collected through the NC Conference of the United Methodist Church.
Organizations are also coming together to assist with Haiti relief. Since the earthquake, schools, congregations, and rotary clubs have hosted their own meal packaging events with SHN, packaging hundreds of thousands of meals to be sent to Haiti. In addition to the meals already sent to Haiti, another approximately 2 million have been pledged for earthquake relief.
In February, Stop Hunger Now partnered with Hooters Restaurants, which held a "Hooters for Haiti" campaign. The event was held on Super Bowl Sunday, and all profits earned during the fourth quarter of the game were donated to SHN's Haiti relief campaign. Hooters raised over one hundred thousand dollars for the cause!
Ray Buchanan, SHN's president, also flew down to Florida to hear Ambassador to Haiti Raymond Joseph speak about Haiti's past, present, and future.

How Can You Help?
The most immediate way to help is to provide monetary donations to Stop Hunger Now in support of ongoing operations. You may donate using the button to the left or by sending a check to Stop Hunger Now.
You can also organize a meal packaging event. The more meals that are packaged, the more meals can be directed to Haiti. If your group is interested in holding a large packaging event, you may specify that you wish your meals to be used for Haiti relief. In order for them to be sent to Haiti, your group must package enough meals to fill a 20’ container (140,000 meals) or a 40’ container (285,000 meals). For more information on holding a meal packaging event, click here.
Stop Hunger Now is also accepting donations of physical commodities and relief items. The people in Haiti are in desperate need of water, food, medicine (and medical supplies), and shelter (tents, etc.). If you are able to secure large amounts of these items, please complete the In-Kind Aid Form and Packing List. Stop Hunger Now encourages partnering with groups such as schools or congregations in order to put together large donations.
There are several requirements for donations of relief items:
- All items must be current (not expired) and usable in the context of a natural disaster.
- All items must be ready to be shipped. They must be packed, sealed, shrink wrapped, palletized and ready to go.
- Large donations of commodities are preferred.
SHN will be directing these resources to a meal packaging facility in Norfolk, Virginia for transport to Haiti. Commercial shipping routes will also be utilized as they become available.
If you are interested in donating commodities, please complete the In-Kind Aid Form and Packing List and return them to Allen Renquist, Program Director of Stop Hunger Now. He can be reached via email at arenquist@stophungernow.org.
We cannot adequately express our gratitude for your generous assistance. Thank you for helping Stop Hunger Now and the people of Haiti!
