Watch the University Million Meal Event 2008 Highlight Video!
More than 4,000 volunteers from NC State, UNC-Chapel Hill, East Carolina, Duke, NC Central, Peace, Meredith and Saint Augustine's participated in packaging a record breaking 1,010,374 meals on August 23, 2008. The live-saving food will provide immediate relief in crisis burdened El Salvador, Haiti, and India's Maropon district.
Several key figures served as honorary co-chairs of the "University Million Meal Event" including Senator Elizabeth Dole, former Congresswoman Eva Clayton, iContact CEO Ryan Allis, actor Jesse Metcalfe, and Universities Fighting World Hunger representatives Dr. June Henton, Dr. Harriet Giles, and Doug Coutts.
"An event of this magnitude takes strong collaboration. We are so thankful to our university partners who did an outstanding job organizing the packaging events on their campuses. We appreciate all of the donors such as Liberty Tax Service, Progress Energy, Skanska USA, and the United Methodist Committee on Relief, whose support made this event possible. And, we have to thank the steadily growing number of volunteers who play an active role in Stop Hunger Now's mission to end hunger in our lifetime," said Rod Brooks, CEO of Stop Hunger Now.
